Origin and History: Originally from African and Arab regions, such as Yemen, Oman and Somalia, frankincense has been used for 6,000 years as a perfume and panacea, whose original name comes from the old French "francencens", which means pure incense. Along with gold and myrrh, it was one of the three gifts presented to the child Jesus by the Magi, according to Christian tradition. Considered the aspirin, penicillin, and Viagra of its time, frankincense was used as a remedy for everything from hemorrhoids to menstrual pain to melanoma (skin cancer). The Greek military physician Pedanius Dioscorides described frankincense as an incredible drug that healed everything, and wrote that the gummy resin could "fill the void of ulcers" or "glue bloody wounds.". The Ebers Papyrus, the most important medical information document from ancient Egypt, mentions frankincense as a treatment for asthma, bleeding, throat infections, and vomiting, among other things. The Egyptians imported massive quantities to also use as perfume, insect and vermin repellent, and to mask the rotten smell when embalming bodies, even frankincense ointment was found in King Tutankhamun's tomb when it was opened in 1922.
